Beautiful, gleaming granite countertops can be a focal point of the kitchen. Their luster and durability make them a popular choice with homeowners in the Howell area. With a little effort and regular maintenance, homeowners can ensure that their granite countertops look good for many years.

Regular Cleaning

Your regular cleaning routine should begin by wiping down the countertop to remove any crumbs or debris. Next, you will make a cleaning solution that is pH balanced and will not damage the counter. It is important that you do not use a cleaner that has acidic chemicals in it as these will harm the countertop. Place warm water in your sink or bucket and add three parts mild detergent and one part rubbing alcohol. The alcohol has antiseptic qualities, but do not add more than one part because it also has solvent properties which could damage the granite. Wash the countertop with this solution and buff dry with a soft cloth.

Treating Stains

If you notice a stain that cannot be removed with regular washing, you will need to use baking soda to get it out. The first step is to determine if the stain is water-based or oil-based. For water-based stains, you will need five tablespoons of liquid detergent to one cup of baking soda. To this mixture, add enough hydrogen peroxide to make it the consistency of sour cream. To treat oil-based stains, combine five tablespoons of liquid detergent to one cup of baking soda. Thin with water to the consistency of sour cream. Using a soft cloth, apply the mixture to the stain and allow it to stand for a day. Plastic wrap can be placed on top so that the cloth stays on the stain.

When you’ve cleaned your granite, take the time to seal it. After applying, allow it to stand for 15 minutes then buff. With a little care, your countertops in your Howell area home will shine.
