The holidays are here! Kids in Howell are vibrating with excitement — or a sugar rush. The adults on the other hand might love Christmas just as much as their younger counterparts, but are a little less excited about the impending work that entails getting ready for the holiday season. We understand that the holidays will always be accompanied with a little stress, but we can alleviate it a bit with these five tips for a holiday-ready kitchen.

Eliminate Clutter

Often with the holidays looming over us, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the cleaning we need to do. However, the best place to start is getting rid of the clutter. Do you have a pile of junk mail to get rid of or old newspapers you’ve never gotten to read? It’s time to send them to their final resting place and get them out of your kitchen. After you’ve gotten rid of all the extra stuff that often builds up in your kitchen, you can start cleaning — get your backsplash, countertops, and floors sparkling!

Clean the Microwave

The microwave can often look like a catastrophic event happened after months of use or one careless event. Though you would like to assume that you are the only one going to be working in the kitchen, we all know that isn’t what happens when there is a whole house full of family. Avoid the embarrassment of a microwave that looks like a disaster, and scrape out the crumbs and wipe your microwave out!

Prep Your Oven

The oven can often become a mess after months and months of use. Charred food and other bits can often be left in our ovens for months. Instead of hoping your mother-in-law doesn’t help you put the turkey in the oven, run a self-cleaning cycle and wipe out your oven. It is also a good idea to clean the burners on your stove!

Disinfect Trash Cans

The trash cans are meant to be dirty, right? So, why clean them? Disinfecting your trash cans can eliminate the risk of foul odors and unappetizing smears. Simply take your trash cans outside and wash them using the hose and some dish soap. If your trash receptacle has liners, be sure to wash your trashcan and the lines — make that trashcan shine because nothing says tacky more than a gross looking trash can.

Dust off the Serveware

If you are like most, your set of fancy serving ware will stay packed away all year except when the holidays have come to stay. Even if your special dishes and serving spoons have been carefully packed away from dust and grime, it can be a good idea to make sure they are clean and ready to accompany the delicious feast.
