Welcome back to the Ward Stone Group Kitchen & Bath blog! Today in our blog, we are going to answer some of the most asked questions about kitchen remodeling by both those who have decided that they want to remodel their kitchen and those who may still be on the fence about it: What is the best-sized kitchen?

What is a Good-Sized Kitchen?

This is a difficult question to answer definitively because the size of kitchen that works best for you is dependent on factors that are both personal and specific to your home size. Also, when it comes to the average size of a kitchen, showhomes that are featured in home magazines skew both the numbers and perception. Show kitchens grab the minds and hearts of the media and homeowners but are unrealistic and gargantuan in size for the average homeowner in the Howell, Oxford, and Okemos area. Many are as big as 5,000 square feet! Most of us doesn’t have million-dollar homes and so a kitchen of this magnitude would in essence “eat up” much of the space of our home.

Kitchens Are Expanding

According to an article by The Spruce, the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association defines a small kitchen as one that is 70 feet and smaller. However, kitchen cabinet makers’ benchmark for a standard kitchen is a room that measures at 10 feet by 10 feet. Also, in the same article, they point to a report by The Home Company that stated that the average kitchen size for a 4,800 square foot home has increased from 480 in 2005 to 720 in 2012. If trends remain consistent, it is safe to say that kitchens will only continue to grow in size.

Redefining the Kitchen

Over the last century, the way that people eat and the way in which they prepare their food is different. Even in the last several years, it has changed due to the foodie culture and health-conscious eating trends, causing the kitchen to become even more of a focal point of the home. The kitchen has essentially become “the heart” of the home. It is not only where food is prepared, but it is also where your kids do their homework, the place where you may work on your work projects — making it an office of sorts. The kitchen is also where people naturally tend to congregate during parties, after dinner, and even throughout the day because food is, in many senses, the means of creating community.

What is the Best-Sized Kitchen?

As we mentioned before, the answer to this question is not definitive. Creating the perfect kitchen is based on your needs, and really the better question to ask is “what is the best designed kitchen?” You can have a huge kitchen, but if the design isn’t practical, then size can’t make up for it.
